The Seven Surprising Life Skills Martial Arts Teaches Kids

Being a child in today’s society is not as easy as adults would like to think!

There are many obstacles and hurdles that children today have to overcome and deal with. Enrolling a child in educational opportunities like Martial Arts instills the values and confidence necessary to overcome many of these obstacles. These are seven essential life skills that Martial Arts teaches children to help them deal with difficult issues.

Focus

Many children have issues with keeping focused on the task at hand. Martial arts will teach children this focus whether it be by using a breaking board, punching pad, or control of physical movements. This learned focus goes farther than the karate mat, and can be applied to other areas such as homework and reading.

Discipline

In order to be successful at Martial Arts, a child must learn discipline. The atmosphere in the school is serious and strict. Instructors don’t tolerate fooling around or excessive talking. This discipline often carries over into the classroom and home life, and translates into better grades and better, more controlled attitudes.

Memorization

Martial Arts requires the memorization of things such as self-defense moves & techniques, patterns, history, philosophy, and a lot more! Students learn these things through repetition and study, and learning this way helps develop memorization skills that help in school.

Effort

Martial Arts pushes students to success they didn’t know they could achieve. As students improve and develop new skills they come to understand the benefit of hard work, and how important it is to always give 100% effort. This definitely shows in other areas of their lives, because they internalize the vision that “Hard work pays off.”

Goal Setting

Martial Arts students learn to see the “big picture” and to keep their “eye on the prize.” Martial Arts students are taught that small steps make a big journey! It takes several steps to go from white belt to black belt, and students are rewarded at every level. This teaches them to set a big goal, but to work toward it intelligently, which makes them much more likely to accomplish big goals later in life!

Respect

Martial Arts revolves around basic respect for instructors, teachers, and other students, but Martial Arts also revolves around self-respect. Because students learn that respecting themselves and others is powerful, and they practice respect in class, they are more respectful.

Confidence

Because Martial Arts students train under pressure, they learn to control their emotions. This helps them be confident and calm, even in scary situations. When they become physically stronger their confidence rises, and they become less afraid of confrontation. Martial Arts students are assertive, and stand up for themselves. This confidence follows them their whole life.

When a child is being bullied, picked on, or simply needs to develop personal control, Martial Arts teaches them focus, discipline, memory, goal setting, respect, and confidence.

And these are just some of life skills that Martial Arts teaches children!

Above all, Martial Arts teaches students the value and rewards of hard work.
